The Aghoris are considered to be the followers of the Hindu religion. They’re believed to be 1000 years old sect. Their only aim in life is to achieve ‘Moksha’. Unlike the other sadhus, their method of achieving Moksha is not an easy way. It is a radical path.
Due to their methods, appearance, and diet, they’re the most feared Sadhus of India. They’ve also earned a lot of respect as well.
Who are these Aghoris and what are their practices, let us know in detail now!
Introduction to their faith
The faith of Aghoris can be traced back to a 17th-century hermit called Baba Keenaram. He is believed to have lived a life of 170 years. He was buried in the holy city, Varanasi. The temple built in Varanasi for Baba Keenaram is considered to be the holiest site by Aghoris.
They generally reside near cremation sites. They are found in cities like Varanasi, Haridwar, dense forests of Bengal and deserts of Gujarat. They can also be found in areas which are the least inhabitant like, Himalayan Caves.
The Aghoris worship Lord Shiva, the destroyer and Goddess Kali, the Goddess of death. They practice their beliefs on two basis- Lord Shiva is the one, the perfect and Lord Shiva is responsible for every good or bad that may happen.
They believe that every person’s soul is Shiva but is distracted by Astamahapasa which means “eight great bonds”. The great eight bonds include sexual pleasure, greed, anger, obsession, fear, and hatred. They practice a certain lifestyle and Sadhnas to have the energy to let go of these worldly desires. They believe, once a human is free of these desires, he attains Moksha.
Ritual Practise
The Aghoris are widely known for two of their practices, Cannibalism and shunning off their clothes.
Cannibalism refers to the diet habit of humans eating the flesh of humans. The Aghoris do not kill humans for their flesh, they eat the human’s corpse flesh. The human flesh is eaten in a cup made up of a human skull. They have a nasty appetite. Not just the human flesh, they even consume the feces, animal urine, their own urine.
They do not wear any cloth on their bodies. Either they’re completely naked or they may be covered with a little jute loin cloth. Roaming naked gives them the confidence to defy shame and is a complete repudiation from the worldly desires.
Often, the Aghoris are found smoking weed. But that is not for any kind of pleasure. It is only to bring the mind to concentration and peace.
Identity
One can easily identify them. They’re covered with human ashes. They wear a human skull necklace. They never cut or comb their hair. The wicked deadlocks, the white ash on their body and the unusual necklace! It is very easy to spot them.
It is believed that they practice posses tantric powers and perform black magic. The black magic has never been used against any human being by them. They’ve never caused any harm to the living human being. According to them, true spirituality can be attained by realizing ‘ purity from the filthiest’.
Pleasure, desires are futile words for the Aghoris as they do not have any faith in these. They don’t wear clothes, they don’t have any money, they do not have any attachments to anyone. They have renounced everything. Their ways are extreme, but they have never imposed their lifestyle on anyone.
It is notable here, their extreme ways of attaining Moksha have never brought them into a negative picture, crime or obscenity.
